Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School Library

Blackrock, South Dublin

The Library project at the chapel building in the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, forms part of a series of re-use and refurbishment projects which revive disused buildings and inject a new purpose and place for them in the 21st Century, on the Carysfort Campus.

The symbolism of the Chapel / Library relationship provided a stimulating backdrop to the project. We decided to retain and refurbish all the significant and wonderful elements of the building, the stained glass, vaulted ceiling, stonework etc. To compliment and enhance these, we placed a new mezzanine structure within the original building, independent of the original architecture. A limited palette of glass and steel and American White Oak create a beautifully lit space, which is sunfilled by day and uplit along the ceiling vault lines at night.

A glass entrance box and link building provide the new elements to allow the building to integrate with the remainder of the campus and adjoining buildings.
