Bru Chaoimhin consists of a series of buildings each of which have undergone
changes and alterations since their construction in 1804. The scope of our works
was limited to Units 1 & 2, both with frontage to Cork Street. Each is three storey’s
in height over a basement storey. The buildings are built of buff or yellow brick with
tuck pointed lime mortar, over a basement storey of Dublin calp random rubble. Cills
and details are granite.
The proposed works consisted of the carrying out of “material alterations” to two
existing long term residential care facilities which form part of the Bru Chaoimhin
complex. The works were completed in two phases comprising of alterations to the
1st & 2nd floor of Unit 1 and the ground, first and second floor of Unit 2, with the
view to improving the facilities for residents and staff which involved provision of
improved sanitary services, consisting of an increase in the number of showers, w/c
accommodation and utility area services, to HSE Infection Control Standards.
The project also addressed long standing fire issues; replacement of external fire
escape stairs and verandas, forming new compartments and fire rated partitions and
upgrading fire resistance at each floor level. This project greatly improved the living
conditions of the long-term elderly patients.
