St. Mel’s Cathedral Longford, a protected structure, built in the neo-classical style between 1840-1893, was severely damaged by a fire on the 25th of December 2009 in which the interior of the building together with the roof and timber floors were completely destroyed.  The project aim was to restore the Cathedral to its former glory whilst developing a liturgical setting fitting of a Cathedral for the 21st century.

This Pastoral Centre provides an up-to-date facility for the various social, educational, senior and youth groups while also providing additional pastoral and local neighbourhood community facilities complimenting and augmenting the existing church and school. A common piazza style area, including steps and ramps was formed to link the two main entrances between the existing Church and new Pastoral Centre on approach

Until 2001, Huntstown Parish was served by a temporary, pre-fabricated, church structure built in the 1970s which was nearing the end of its useful life. It was also no longer suitable for this growing Parish.
